NewSubMagazineServices renews subs without permission

Not only do they automatically renew without permission, with no notice, they make you call their "Automated Service" where they make it nearly impossible to unsubscribe, you cannot reach a human being, and they deduct fairly hefty service charges when you do finally manage cancellation. They ask you "trick" questions, which make it SOUND like you are cancelling, but if you answer "yes" you are actually EXTENDING your subscription for another three months.

What an incredible rip off. Additionally, I had to dial into the same horrible machine four times: once for each magazine they automatically renewed by charging my credit card

Newsub Magazine Services

I've been receiving issues of Entertainment Weekly lately. What surprised me is I have never expressed interest in this magazine.

I sent EW an e-mail asking them how I got on their mailing list, since I don't remember ever even considering a subscription to them. They're response was that their records show a subscription in my name was made to them through this agency called Newsub Magazine Services.

How NMS got my info is beyond me. According to EW, I have to call NMS to cancel "my" subscription. My question is how these leeches were able to get a hold of my info.

Charges for 2 mag subscriptions offered as club intro

Charged for two magazine subscriptions. One is Time Magazine and other is People magazine.

These were offered as trail subscriptions from Books A Million book club. I have tried to contact someone in person after being charged for each magazine with no luck. I have recieved nothing by mail or email telling me to cancel before they drafted/debited payment from my account. All I ever get is automated service from which I get nowhere.

I am very upset about this.

Also can not locate anything about the service from BBB. I would like my funds to be refunded to my account at once!

Same thing happened to a friend of mine! She had tons of overdraft fees because of them draining her savings and wouldn't refund any of it!

Guest

The same scenario happened to me also. I read complaints for this issue and someone mentioned that you can try to call the number 203-595-**** to get someone in person instead of automated service.

I will call them too. Good luck Cherowen!

Guest

I did the same thing. Books A Million told me if I didn't want the subscriptions that they would automatically be cancelled if I didn't call to renew.

Well, I didn't call and I got charged for People and SI. I called the 1-877 number. If you hit 0, you can talk to a real person.

They credited my account and were very friendly. It stinks that I had to go through that, I wish Books A Million would have explained it better.

Guest

I fell for this trick, as well. After dialing the number that was given to me, I, of course, got an automated answering machine.

Guess they can't hire someone to sit at the phone and answer it so costumers can talk with a real person. I'll continue to shop at BAM, but don't plan on signing up for any "free trial."

Unauthorized use of my credit card

What gives you the right to authorize payment to a magazine company and charge it to my account? I can get a renewal for $16.00 if I so choose, but, you renew the same magazine that I'm getting for $30.00, I am furious.

I intend to fight this tooth and nail. It is disgusting and I'm hopeing that everyone this happens to will retaliate.

I was furious reading my emails and a confirmation from ESSENCE magazine for a renewal good until 9/11 , I had no knowledge of this, it was not authorized, I am livid as to how my account was drafted without my knowledge.Who is NEWSUB? I am seeking legal advice tomorrow am.

We have had a similar problem. We agreed to a 3 month free trial of a magazine which we were told we wouldn't be charged for if we cancelled.

We cancelled, but were still charged and couldn't get a refund for that year. Then they renewed after we tried to cancel again, and said they wouldn't refund that either and we would not be renewed again. We CANCELLED the credit card they had charged to prevent this from happening again. OUR NEW CREDIT CARD WAS JUST CHARGED FOR ANOTHER YEAR.

How are they getting our credit card information????? We contested the charge and the credit card company contacted NEWSUB and said they got the money back from them.

Since they aren't getting paid this time, I hope they stop sending these *** magazines and don't try to renew again next year, but I guess we'll see. I hope it all worked out for you.

This company is a scam! Rip Off!

This company scams people and rips them off. NEVER DO BUSINESS with them.

They sign you up for a magazine when you buy things at stores and then charge you for years and years without getting caught and then they are really rude when you call them out on what they are doing. They should be shut down. Horrible customer service, rude people on the phone that couldn't care less that what they are doing is wrong.

They make you feel like you are dumb and they pretend that there is nothing they can do to help you because everything was explained in the TERMS OF SERVICE AGREEMENT that was printed on your receipt in tiny print. Stores claim that they explain all of this to you at the time of purchase but they don't and you lose in the end.

Unauthorized credit card charges for magazine subscriptions

I noticed credit card charges for two magazines that I knew I didn't renew. I usually pay a discount rate, and these subscriptions were the full rate.

I called 877-813-**** and (at the suggestion of another online posting) kept dialing a bunch of random numbers (which the automated voice did not like) until I finally a got a real person. It was clear that she got these calls all the time. She explained that, when I filled out a feedback form for Bizrate, I had elected to receive the "gift" of two magazine subscriptions for $2 each (which is true), but the "fine print" on that "gift" was that the subscriptions would be automatically renewed unless I expressly told them NOT to renew. I told her that I did not want to renew the subscriptions and asked her to credit my account.

She said she would -- I'll have to check next month's credit card bill. I then asked her if she saw any other magazine subscriptions on my account, and she mentioned a third magazine that I definitely have never subscribed to and wouldn't even take as a "gift," so I told her to cancel that one too. (The third magazine subscription had not been billed yet, so no credit needed.) Ironically, she then offered me a selection of "gifts" for being a good customer -- stainless steel mug, phone card, etc.

-- which I declined.

Moral of the story: check your credit card statements; don't give up when you reach the automated voicemail choices; and don't accept "gifts" that seem too good to be true.

What I am having a hard time understanding is after having obtained a new bank account number and a new check card; how in the world were they able to charge my account when the information they have for me is no longer valid? I won't be taking this issue up with them I am going straight to the bank.

Rip off!

This company is aweful! But the talking jibberish works. Was able to cancel all 4 magazines at one time with a real person. They billed me $43 for Southern Living when you can get the same thing direct for only $21. What a rip off!

I have not received Eating Well magazine in 6 months yet they renewed it?! Excuse me?

I originally ordered Metropolitan Home and when it went under they started sending me Women's Day. This magazine is far inferior and not even the same type of publication. Then they automatically renewed this one for $31! It is not worth $31 and I never ordered it in the first place!

And for the 4th one I just didn't want it anymore.

NewSub magazines Services LLC charged my card against my will

A month ago I received 2 cards in the mail from NewSub Magazine Services. One was a renewal notice for a magazine they had sent to me on a trieal basis and the other was for a magazine I have never received or ordered.

I called to cancel both subscriptions because I did not want to pay the full(overpriced) amount. I was able to cancel the bogus magazine subscription I have never received, but the sutomated system informed me that they had no record of my subscription. In fact, after the other was cancelled, they had no record of any subscriptions for me. However, today I noticed a charge on my credit card from them for the mysterious disappearing magazine subscription.

I called and cancelled and I disputed the charge with my credit card company. I believe this was intentional and I am no longer going to do any business with this company!

This company is 100% fraud. some legal action should be taken.

Guest

It's almost 2012 and they are still 100% fraud. They just charged my card and I got the reimbursement..It was only 65% of what they charged me so I am still in the process of hearing back from the C.S.

so I can get a full refund. I am going to look into legal cases against this company b/c this is bull.

They go under New Subscription Services now. Current #, 877-210-****

NewSub Magazine Scam

NewSub Magazine Services, LLC has also taken the liberty of deducting fees from my checking account today. Thank goodness, I check my account nearly every day! I also received a postcard in the mail today telling me I must call an 800 number by May 14 to cancel subscriptions on four magazines or I will be charged for them.

When I called there were no options given to the first question but to renew---now how does one call the company to get the unauthorized money taken out of my account put back in?!?

This has to be illegal. I have never had anything like this happen to me.

Did you look for their number online? Sometimes you can cancel from the internet.

You might have to close your banking account and reopen a new one. And yes, it's illegal for them to take money from your bank without authorization.

Guest

New Sub Magazine Service is owned by Synapse Company. They charged me for a magazine that had been discontinued from the publisher.

When I finally got around the automated system and contacted someone they were located in another country.

Trust me, you do not want to get any products from this company. They were created to bilk their customers out of money through their credit card account.

Charged my account without permission

Newsub magazine needs to be sued. They have scammed me, and from what I can tell, MANY other people.

They somehow charged my debit card without my consent. I only found out because I constantly check my online bank account, and saw that there were numerous charges from these people.

I am on to them now, and now they will have to deal with me. My next stop is consumer reports, and I will find out what I have to do to shut them down.

I suggest that everyone else who has been conned do the same.

BEWARE OF NEWSUBMAGAZINE !!!!!!!!!!

Unwanted automatic continuance of subscriptions

Received a notice that unwanted magazine subscriptions would be continued and charged to my credit card without my authorization. This came from NewSub Magazine Services, LLC, C/O Processing Center, PO Box 30468, Salt Lake City UT 84130.

In trying to cancel all subscriptions I was forced to listen to numerous sales pitches. It took about twenty minutes to cancel three magazines, but the instructions were very confusing and irritating.

I finally did receive confirmation numbers for the three magazines. Very questionable business practice.

If someone doesn't have either the patience or skills to thrash thru their nonsense, they will be charged as indicated.

I have notified my Better Business Bureau. Very fraudulent practices. It Stinks!

I received a 'dun'notice that I had a past due bill of $8.49 and had been contacted repeatedly to pay up for a magazine I let expire. The letter made it sound like I had ordered a subscription and never paid and threatened by "further action.

Came on a yellow sheet with TELEWIRE Electronic Message ,but disclaimed that they did not send it. :(

Guest

discontinued subscription January 2011, prior to the deadline stated of February 2011.

I am still getting magazine with an expiration date on the cover of September 2012

Charged my credit card without authorization

I called the number on my credit card statement and got the automated run around several times. Then I called and was silent for a few minutes and finally a real person got on the line.

So if your are as frustrated as I was you might try this. I also called my credit card company and was told by the first person there was nothing they could do, but called them back and was assisted by someone else in removing the charges. Thank-you! In addition I spoke to the manager of the store offering the "free-trial" and they were quite helpful and promised to look further into the type of company they are doing business with.

Credit Card charged w/o my permission

I just received our Bank of America credit card statement and noticed two charges for merchandise I had not requested. Both of these entries had 800 telephone numbers which I called.

I found out that these magazine subscriptions were originally ordered through Newsub Magazine Subscription. However, Newsub renewed these subscriptions for Better Homes and Gardens and National Geographic Adventure without my request and then charged my credit card for those subscriptions also without my permission. When I went to cancel the subscriptions this week, Newsub did not refund the complete amount. One charge was for $29 and I have received a credit for $26.58 (not the full charge) and the second charge for $31, I am waiting for a credit to appear in the amount of $27.12.

Both of these refund amounts were given to me during my automated telephone call.

Also Newsub attempted to give me some additional great magazine deals which I declines, or at least I hope I declined them. Lesson learned - do not order any magazine subscriptions with your credit card.

Did not cancel as asked, but charged my card

I am very upset that I called and cancelled this order before it was delivered and they still billed my card, and I don't get the magazines. I have made several phone calls regarding this matter, but I keep getting the same information that they will not future bill me.

The offer was if you were not satisified you can call and get a full refund. That information it totally incorrect. I called again this morning and explained that they have charged my card for 3 magazines that I do not want.

She offered to cancel but to allow me to continue to receive the magazines for $5.97 for 11 issues. I refused.

I WAS PISSED BECAUSE THEY CHARGED AN UNAUTHORIZED TRANSACTION TO MY CARD :( ; But all you need to so is call either180******** or 188******** and listen to the automated system. AS SOON as the system comes on, begin typing in random numbers and jibberish to all of its questions.

After about 7-10 tries it will connect you to a REAL BREATHING/LIVE PERSON. Once you are connected, REQUEST YOUR FULL REFUND- it worked for me 5mins ago :grin

Guest

Same thing happened to me. I called and asked to have my subscriptions cancelled, they send you a letter saying that if you do not want to continue anymore then just dont answer the letter and thats what i did.

I just didnt reply to the renewal letter but guess what, they are still charging me. I called the first time and they cancelled it but did not remove the charge from my credit card.

Now whenever I call, i only get automated answering system that does not have an option to talk to them directly and does not identify the problem. Do not use them, the individual magazine companies will not help you and they will just keep taking your money.

Guest

I suggest calling Synapse's direct number listed on their website 203-595-**** and ask to speak with someone in the New Sub Magazine Division. I spoke to an individual right away.

I admit I was very angry when I made the call, but in spite of this the customer service rep was courteous. Somehow this company is allowed to automatically renew subscriptions in your name and charge your credit card without your current consent. I have an elderly friend with a mailbox overflowing with unwanted magazines.

In the process of trying to cancel these, I discovered that New Sub had renewed subscriptions to 11 different magazines until 2017 and charged hundreds of dollars to my friend's credit card! I thank the Consumer Reports rep I spoke with for telling me that is was New Sub that had renewed the subscription to their magazine.

Guest

I thank whoever supplied the Florida call center phone number, I actually was able to speak with a human, and cancelled all my subscriptions and received a confirmation number and supposedly they recorded the conversation for quality control!! I was given the name David Korbusieski/Vendor Relations Manager who can be contacted regarding subscriptions/ cancelations etc... PO Box 30468 Salt Lake City UT 84130 (Through the Synapses Group Inc.)

Guest

Oh my goodness! you are so right, the magazine company itself will do nothing.

I have just spent considerable time and frustration trying to cancel a subscription for which I did not get a renewal card - only automated answering system!!!!!!

A friend just told me to try inputing the credit card number a couple of digits off, apparently they match to your phone number and that might signal a "real live person" to answer!!!! Here we go

Guest

I have been trying to get in touch with NewSub Magazine Services and all I get is the *** automated answering system...which HIGHLY pissed me off!!!! So I took Kharis advice and start hitting random numbers until they sent me to a REAL person. Now I'm getting my total and complete refund (I hope) NEVER AGAIN will I use this service!

Guest

If this happens to you:

When you are charged a serious amount of money, or even a little bit, from a subscription that you honestly have NO idea where, and when it came from...Seriously call 203-595-****. Full Refunds, and money is put into your account within 72 hours.

I went directly to Sports Illustrated and Time to cancel...they gave me a different number to call 877-813-****...hope this helps someone Newsub *** and someone should look into these kinds of practices. I am more disappointed with FYE for tricking me into this than I am with Newsub. It will be Best Buy and Target for me from now on.

Guest

I went to their website magcustomerservice.com and cancelled my subscriptions before being charged. I received cancellation numbers, and hopefully the charges will not go through. I didn't have much luck calling the hotlines.

Guest

Cancel by talking to the rep as Nate says. The automated system is designed to mislead as it says it canceled it but what it means is that it canceled any future billings and will continue to send you magazines for at least another year as they charged you for it already.

Guest

Thank you for this post! I returned from a two-year overseas military deployment to find all these magazines I never ordered!

(I was told I agreed to them when I made a clothing purchase from a catalog--but I know this is not true!) When I called the number on my credit card statement, I followed the automated prompts to cancel my subscription, but instead they were renewed and my card was charged again! This is just plain FRAUD if you ask me! I will try the other phone numbers given here. Wish me luck!

P.S.

Has anyone here contacted the Better Business Bureau about these practices? I plan to--I hope you will too.

Guest

michelle pushing a bunch of numbers does work haha good job! IM about to have at it on one of these sons of ***!

Thank you so much to everyone! The crazy number pushing worked!

I AM FURIOUS!@@ It's been PAST the 72 hours and my refund has not been credited. I am now contacting the U.S. Attorney Generals Office.

Guest

Called 203-595-**** and supposedly they will be giving me a refund in 72 hours. I will definitely check my credit card statement.

They auto-renewed me in December and when I called then they said they would make a note not to renew again. Today they confirmed I was on the non-renew list but I was still renewed.

I'm planning to download the forms from the Attorney General's office and report them for illegal business practices. I encourage you all to do the same.

Guest

i called to cancel my renewal on my magazines that i received in the mail and as we all know their system is the worse i ve ever came across. it cancelled all but 1 and billed my card so then i called it again and when i started pushing numbers it gave my this number 800-601-**** it s automated also but when you start punching numbers it will connect you with a live person and supposively will be receiving a return to my card within 1-2 days.

Guest

I appreciate the comment by Nate. The number 203-595-**** he provided actually connects you to someone who can transfer to a representative at the NewSub Magazine.

I was able to get a re-fund for the recent charge of $51.00. At least, that is what they said; we'll see. Here is my piece of experience with them. When I called to cancel in 2008, I have been offered a year subscription for a dollar.

Period. No "small font" below; that was a machine talking. And now this gal was trying to explain the automated renewal which was never even mentioned.

Also, another advice: if you cancel with a publisher and even get a printed confirmation, it does not necessarily mean that NewSub will stop sending you the issues and charging.

So, keep an eye on your billing statements and call the number above. Good luck.

Guest

I also called the direct number listed on their website 203-595-**** and asked to speak with someone in the New Sub Magazine Division. I spoke with Mike who quickly canceled all the subscriptions and told me I'd have a refund within 72 business hours.

New Sub Services ***!!!

Thanks for the info about not pushing any buttons. It took 10 min but got a real person and confirmation #. I asked for extension so I could reach Debbie Taylor (a real name??)if I have any other problems. Of course that is not possible, but if you push the 0 button TWICE you should get a real person!

I never ordered any mags they sent them to me as a free gift when I purchased a book! Nothing in life is free!!! This company insisted by law they must send out renewal info but they never did! Who checks up on them? With as many complaints I have read today someone should! This is a scam and a disgrace!

I also tried calling the magazine itself( cooking light, Time, and National Geographic) but they told me they could not cancel any orders placed by New Sub.

Here is an address I obtained who knows if it is real but my fury is too great not to write letter.

Processing

PO BOX 30468

I also encourage everyone not to just vent here but call the Better Business Burrow and report this company!

these are very shady folks. they keep calling (harrassing phone calls from blocked caller ID) trying to get credit card info and saying I'm already signed up for a bunch of *** that I never agreed to.

I accepted a free one-year sub to 1 mag and now the torture never stops.

The mag itself keeps referring me back to them and says they can't cancel their own mag! WTF?!!

I found a number under another name. Still a subsidiary of Synapse. I finally got to talk to someone. I told them my address and name and they said no subscriptions. after reading all the complaints I can't believe this "company" can't be stopped. If you have been abused by them be persistent!! It took me half a day and many calls to have the charges refunded [I hope] Good luck and I will be contacting the BBB!

Guest

Received a "we will keep sending your subscription" postcard.Funny thing, I have not ordered any publications. Tried and really tried to get ahold of someone.

Yep, alot of magazines came that I did not order. Then they are saying if I do not pay, it's off to collections and there goes your credit! Make sure to write to the company and send it certified. If you end up in court you can prove everything.

Oh, by the way california law says if you did not order it, it's free.

After the court date, it was amazing that the magazines stopped! What a hassle!@#$% :(

Thanks Lynn. I dialed 00 and talked to a real person.

He tried talking me into 6 more months for 2 bucks.

Some people don't listen. Thanks again.
